Understanding Tests & Assessments
Types of Assessments & Benefits
Tests or assessments are ways to measure what a child has learned. Assessments are not only taken in a quiet classroom with a paper and pencil, rather there are many different types of assessments teachers use day to day to understand a student’s progress. Examples include testing knowledge by observing their work, assigning a task to complete, or through a formal test or quiz. Schools follow a list of standards students should learn each year across all subjects, and they test students to measure their learning accordingly. Here are the types of assessments you may see.

Action for families: Check today if your child is at grade level
As parents and caregivers, you can also play an active role in assessing reading and math levels to provide additional support to your child. Your understanding on their progress can help create a partnership with the teacher and help bridge gaps in your child’s learning. This can also help you create opportunities to challenge children to reach their full potential.

Assessing your child’s development holistically
Schools don’t only test achievement in reading, math, or science but also follow progress on a student’s social, emotional and physical growth. As parents, we can use everyday observations to learn more about our children. Based on your child’s age, they should be meeting specific targets or milestones in the four areas described below. Assessing your child through observation in these four areas can help you better understand your child’s development and support them where needed.
